Root canals & Endodontics
Root canal treatments are performed when the nerve of a tooth has become inflamed or died. The benefit of a root canal is that it can save a tooth from being removed. Root canal treatments have a reputation for being painful and scary, however, modern techniques and anaesthesia (numbing) allow for us to perform the procedure with minimal discomfort.
At Bannockburn Dental, our experienced dentists use the latest techniques and technologies to perform root canal treatment with precision and care. Our dentists are highly skilled and will ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Why perform a root canal?
When a tooth is badly damaged from decay, trauma or cracking, the nerve inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected and can cause severe pain or swelling. A root canal removes the nerve or infection inside the tooth, cleans the area and seals it to prevent further infection or pain.
Can I just take antibiotics?
Unfortunately, as the infection is within the roots of the teeth, antibiotics are unable to remove the cause of the infection. While antibiotics will help reduce the pain from an abscess or swelling, they will not completely remove the infection. Once the bacteria continue to spread, the pain or swelling may return.
Some common signs that you may have an infection or need root canal treatment include:
- Severe and lasting pain following hot and cold food/drinks
- Constant aching in the jaw or tooth, especially when chewing or applying pressure
- Redness, swelling or a small pimple/bump in the gum next to the affected tooth
- Discolouration of the tooth
If you are experiencing these symptoms, then contact us as soon as possible so that we can help you before your pain becomes more severe.
